The Calendar Just Keeps On Tickin'...
Wednesday, February 22, 2012
7:28cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Windy and warmer, to start the day with temperatures already climbing into the mid 30's ... Unfortunately, the wind gusts are also pushing into the mid 30's and higher... Meaning that heavy jacket you were going to wear against the cold will just blow away anyway...
All of the wind is just a pretense to a storm that will slide through in the next day or so, bringing snow, high winds and an increased fire danger as well, with a Red Flag Warning in effect today until 5pm. Forecasters are saying that the most dangerous conditions are expected along the Southern Colorado border with New Mexico...
Snowfall, they say will be light around Southern Colorado with heavier amounts expected to the north of us...
Still, watch out for those winds... They'll knock you off the highway in a heartbeat!
So, what's on the calendar for the rest of the month? This morning, the Cuchara Yoga folks are gathering in the Community Room at the Cuchara Inn... beginning at 10am... Our next community Potluck Dinner and A Show will be next Wednesday, [NOT Thursday] on Leap Day, February 29th, gathering at 6pm at Brewed Awakening... Watch the calendar next to these words for details on the menu...
Much fun to be had in the next few weeks... Cuchara is waiting for you!

6:36cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! With fog immersed in the valley and a frigid 13 degrees, its a cold damp morning as we begin the day. Highs today around 28, up to 36 tomorrow with the breezes continuing... Maybe 42 by Wednesday...

Be sure to mark your calendars and come on back as Broomball will be on, one more time this season, coming up on March 17th... and of course, be sure to check out the services of Vision Finder Pro... high quality video production and photography right here in the valley...

Some Random Thoughts On A Sunday...
Sunday, February 19, 2012
8:56cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A late beginning on a lazy Sundaywith crystal clear skies, and sunshine all the way around... Already 35 degrees and inching our way toward a high near 40...
So like the Pauxatawny Phil, who saw his shadow and told us that it means six more weeks of winter... A cloudless sky has forecasters calling for a 30% chance of snow this afternoon, 40% overnight and 40% for tomorrow... Digging deeper into the forecast tells us that we might see 1 - 2 inches out of this...
By Tuesday, we're back to sunshine and pretty much good with that through the weekend...
Some random thoughts for this lazy Sunday morning...
A huge round of applause for the folks who are working diligently to bring all of the planning together for the first ever Cuchara Country Music Festival, happening in June... emails are flying back and forth, phone calls are being made and the energy never stops... It's going to be great show...
We've heard rumors that there might be a play by play video of yesterday's Broomball tournament coming out soon... We're told that about 30 players were on hand and a good time was had by all...
Confidential to Jill and Michael of Broken Angel, the duo that performed at the Dog Bar & Grill last night: Wishing you a safe ride home in the daylight and hoping the ghosts in the attic did not disturb your sleep that much...
And one more thing... Chicken Fried at the Dog Bar today... 'nuff said...
On that note... It's a lazy day in the valley, take time, sit back, relax...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Saturday, February 18, 2012
7:38cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! On a cold, cold morning, with an extra large serving of bright sunshine to go around, the weekend is getting underway in fine style already... Blue skies, with not a cloud to be found, we're still in the single digits on nearly every gauge... Temp of 5, Wind at 3, Rain at 0... It's that pesky humidity that will getcha every time... at 84%.

Reasons To Celebrate! Two Important Guys With Birthdays This Week...
Friday, February 17, 2012
6:38cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Crystal clear skies and not a cloud any where to be found on this Friday morning... Brisk temperatures at an even 9.5 degrees, leading to a high today around 37 degrees. Seems to be the pattern of late... Little to no snow, moderate temperatures and getting above the freezing mark for the afternoon... Those Spring snowfalls must be just around the corner, if we're to bring our snow totals to our average of 250 inches or more...
So the story remains the same: Slight chance of snow today, high in the upper 30's... Sunshine for Saturday and up to 38... back to a chance for snow by Sunday night after daytime highs into the mid 40's...
What a great group of folks showed up last night to enjoy another fantastic potluck dinner at the Winter Brewed Awakening... nearly 30 folks were there to enjoy a smorgasbord of Baked Potato and fixin's with an ample supply of chili and cheese, sour cream and butter, turkey bacon bit and more... Good conversation and a chance to welcome a few new folks to the neighborhood... Afterward, all retired to the community room to enjoy a great show...
Tonight, the Dog Bar & Grill opens their doors at 4pm to begin a Presidents' Day Weekend... Tomorrow, get ready for Broomball at 1pm followed up by the music of one of our favorite bands, Jill Michaels and Broken Angel... taking the stage around 8:30... And don't forget, Chicken Fried on Sunday...

Enke's To Host Dave Stringer And Friends...
Sunday, February 12, 2012
8:14cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Gray skies and foggy in the valley this morning... Mild temps already reaching into the mid 30's at the moment. Forecasters say the gray day will continue... Chance of snow and a snow/rain mix will last through through the daylight hours without much accumulation to speak of... Tomorrow, back to sunshine, then snow again for the rest of the week... Almost to our high for the day, right now, at 33 degrees.
David and Annie Enke have always brought great music and talent to the Cuchara Valley with their house concerts over the past several years and tomorrow night will be no exception... The Enkes will be hosting Dave Stringer and Friends for a potluck dinner and musical event that is sure to please... Here's more from David's Facebook page:
"Dave Stringer is at the forefront of the new Kirtan movement. Kirtan is a folk form that arose from the devotional Bhakti Yoga movement of 15th century India. Dave's sound marries the transcendent mysticism of traditional Indian instruments with the exuberant, groove-oriented sounds of American gospel and progressive Jazz. His work translates the ancient traditions of Kirtan and Yoga into a inspiring and thoroughly modern participatory theater, open to a multiplicity of interpretations and accessible to all."
All are invited to attend... At David and Annie's home, 722 E. Francisco Street in La Veta, the event begins Monday night at 5pm with food and drink, and music to follow... Bring something to eat and share... a $10-$15 donation is gratefully accepted...

Cuchara Country Music Fest On Track For June...
Saturday, February 11, 2012
8:11cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and blue skies high in the valley with heavy fog down La Veta way this morning... Our Webcams tell the tale of two different stories... While Grandote Peaks Golf Course is shrouded in fog, up in the valley skies are clear and there is not a cloud to be found...
Right now, just 9 degrees... We should reach the mid 30's before the day is done... Overnight and tomorrow look for a 30% chance for snow showers developing, then clearing by Monday...Still temps will be comfortable, into the mid 30's throughout the week, with lows dropping into the teens...
On the Good News side of the page, the Cuchara Country Music Fest is slated to kick off the evening of June 15th and continue all afternoon on Saturday the 16th... Rising stars Due West will be headline the event on Main Street Cuchara... Many more regional and nationally known artists are being invited to perform to create a country music bill that you will surely want to see and hear...
Friday night events will include a sponsor party at the Dog Bar & Grill for those businesses and individuals who are helping us bring the show to life.... At the Timbers, we are planning a special show as well with details to come...
Then, get ready for a day long festival of music and fun, that kicks off at 1pm on Saturday and extends all the way into the evening hours...
Do not miss out on this great event, the First Annual Cuchara Music Fest! Be watching for more details on these pages soon...

Common Sense Is Required...
Friday, February 10, 2012
7:14cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A fresh round of snow late yesterday afternoon left not quite four inches behind... This morning, 13 degrees on the thermometer, mostly clear with a few high clouds around the edges of the sky... All in all, a beautiful start to the day...
And not a bad weekend either... Sunshine will prevail today and into tomorrrow, with the chance of a dusting on Sunday about 1 in 3... The beginning of the week is looking incredible with sunshine back and highs into the upper 30's...
Election season is right around the corner and while some might think the important races are those on a national level (they are...) there are other elections that are just as important on the local level...
This year will see new faces on the Board of County Commissioners, and citizens of La Veta will elect a Town Board and Mayor...
The Board of Directors for the Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center will have open seats and closer to home, there is the need to fill two seats on the Cucharas Sanitation and Water District Board of Directors...
If you have an interest in running for one of those two seats, you'll find all the necessary information on the CSWD website at www.cuchara.org ... A couple of simple forms to fill out and a couple of dates you'll want to be aware of... The Deadline for Self Nomination is March 2nd, 2012 at 3pm... And Monday, March 5th, 2012 is the deadline for write-in candidates to file an Affidavit of Intent... The election will be held May 8th...
If you reside inside the town limits of La Veta, we encourage you to consider a run for office on the Town Board and if you are live within the Hospital Districts borders or within Huerfano County, you might consider one of those two Boards...
We need common sense, intelligent people to come forth and work for the good of our region... Nothing gets done until somebody steps up to do it...

Welcome Home To A Favorite Son...
Thursday, February 09, 2012
8:07cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Blue skies, a few clouds around the Peaks and just shy of 25 degrees this morning... winds are calm at the moment and things are looking good... until...
Later today, they say, a 70% chance of snow showers with only 1 - 2 inches coming out of the storm... Tomorrow, mostly sunny, possible snow over the weekend and highs into the mid to upper 30's all the way through... Just need to keep that snow machine chuggin' along...
The weekend is nearly upon us and with that, the village wakes up just a bit... The Dog Bar & Grill will be opening their doors tomorrow afternoon beginning at 4pm... And of course, noon on Saturday and Sunday...
And great news for everyone who enjoys spending time at the DB&G...This weekend, the Sandbecks will welcome home U.S. Marine Corps son, Ryan Sandbeck, who is back to spend the next two weeks with mom and dad and, of course, will be at the Dog Bar Saturday night to connect with old friends... And, it's a chance for you to come on out and enjoy a weekend in the mountains, as well...
Welcome Home, Ryan! Cuchara is waiting for you!

Clean, Fresh Carpets Make All The Difference...
Wednesday, February 08, 2012
6:32cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Single digit temperatures to begin the day after overnight lows, not far from where we are at the moment... 8 degrees on the CSWD thermometer, a light wind and no precip overnight. After our report yesterday, we found an additional inch of snow on the steps, so will call it an unofficial 10 inches of fresh snow from our latest storm...
The 7-Day calls for a 20% chance of snow showers today, 30% into tomorrow and back to 20% for tomorrow night.... No word on how that translates into measurable amounts... which leads us to believe that it could be a bunch... The good news, of course, is that we're finally coming into a cycle of snow every few days... which, hopefully will last until the end of April...
And as the sun rises on the Spanish Peaks, a few beautiful cloud formations are giving us some spectacular colors...
Wanted to pass along our Thanks and appreciation to Firefighter extradinaire Sue Pezze, who came through with her carpet cleaning gear to scour the carpets of the Community Room and Conference Center at the Cuchara Inn... Now fresh and revigorated, the rooms are in much better shape for Yoga, Shows and all the events coming up in the next few weeks...
And speaking of Yoga... On for this morning, in the Community Room ... 10 c'clock sharp...
And, by the way, there will not be a Potluck Dinner for tomorrow night as is the custom... the Mexican Fiesta scheduled for last week is now on the calendar for next week...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

A Clumsy Cable Cutter Caused Quite A Commotion...
Tuesday, February 07, 2012
7:32cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Unofficially, 9 inches of fresh snow out on the deck with more coming down... 12 degrees with frozen fog, slick roads and just a great day to be working inside... The weather guys suggest this will clear off before 11am, then we'll see sunny skies through the remainder of the day... Look for highs around 29 degrees. More sunshine for tomorrow, with highs reaching back into the upper 30's and a chance for more snow on Thursday... And how about this? Sunshine and into the 40's for the weekend.
So, a clumsy cable cutter working for the phone company caused quite a calamity yesterday... when the everyone in the valley was faced with having no long distance, no Verizon mobile service and [Gasp!!] NO INTERNET service from about 10:45am through 3 o'clock or so...
It was agonizing...
Have you ever tried to get through your day without Facebook? Email? CNN.com? Calling a friend in the next county? My gosh, we actually had to [horrors!!] work!?
So when my grandchildren [if I were to have any] ask, "Grandpa, what did you do when the Internet went down that day back in 2012?" I'd have to say... "Kids... It was just like being stuck back in the 70's."
And with that, stay safe and keep those connections tight! Cuchara is waiting for you!

Keepin' That Snowplow Movin'...
Monday, February 06, 2012
7:50cvt -- Good morning, Cuchara Valley! Another inch here and another inch there... and before you know it, we've added another couple of inches to the snow totals since the storm ended on Saturday...
Right now, fog shrouds the valley, and the snow continues to fall... 24 degrees... Overnight lows dipped into the single digits again, and we will be lucky to see 32 for a high today... 50% chance of snow continuing, 60% overnight and a bit less for tomorrow... By the time we're done, we'll have another 3 - 6 to add to the totals...
Later in the week, sunshine and temperatures will be climbing...
And this note of Thanks to Cal Sandbeck who does one heck of a job, keeping nearly the entire Main Street of Cuchara cleared after our major snow storms... And, yeah, he wants us to think that he's just clearing the parking for the Dog Bar & Grill... We want him to know that we appreciate the easy drive and a spot to park for all of the other Village activities going on at the Brewed and The Cuchara Inn... It takes all kinds of people to keep things moving... And in Cal, we have someone to move all the snow!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

You Mean To Say, There's A Football Game On Between All Those Great Commercials?
Sunday, February 05, 2012
9:11cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Bright sunshine and clear skies light up the day as we move through a Sunday morning... Already 15 degrees after an overnight low of .1 ... Yeah, that's point one on the thermometer... The frigid cold should break out to a high today of around 33.. with sunshine throughout the afternoon. Next chance for snow comes in tomorrow at 30% for the daylight hours, 40% overnight and 20% for Tuesday... No mention yet of how much...
And it's SuperBowl Sunday, with this burning question hanging in the air... Watch it for the game? Or watch it for the commercials? Being in the advertising profession, for years, we would go to SuperBowl Parties where the volume would only go up at a commercial break while the noise in the room would drop... To this day, we can't tell you who won or lost the game.. But we remember those great ads...
Today promises to be another highlight reel of great, often hilarious advertiser appeals... My advice? Turn up the volume, if only during the commercials...
Of course, the Dog Bar & Grill will have the beer flowing and the game on the Big Screen...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Weather or Not, Cuchara Finally Gets Some Snow...
Saturday, February 04, 2012
8:06cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Frigidly cold this morning with clearing skies following the Massive Colorado Blizzard of 2012... Down in our neighborhood, we faired pretty well with an unofficial14 inches of snow since Thursday Afternoon...
Up North and to the West of the Denver Metro, the mountain towns Blackhawk and Central City report as much 4 feet of snow. 36" fell in Evergreen and just over 2 feet on the southern edge of Denver in Highlands Ranch.
Further out on the plains, roads remain closed and drifts are high... In our little Valley, the Highway of Legends is clear and Cuchara is open for business...
Still bitterly cold, with temps down around 4 degrees right now. We will maybe see 27 by days end, with sunshine for the next couple of days... Our next chance for snow comes Monday and into Tuesday with a one in five chance at this time...
So, catching up with the snowstorm and realigning the Calendars just a bit... Our events planning meeting for the Village that was to have been Yesterday morning has now been rescheduled for this morning... 9:30 at the Dog Bar & Grill. The Mexican Fiesta Dinner and a Show that was to have been Thursday Night, which then turned into Friday night, has now been rescheduled for Thursday Night, February 16th... 6pm at the Brewed Awakening with the show to follow upstairs in The Cuchara Community Room.....
And all of that makes no sense, there is always the Cuchara Community Calendar... Up a bit and just to the left of these words...
Stay warm... Stay Dry... Cuchara is waiting for you!

Just Like Groundhog Day... All Over Again
Friday, February 03, 2012
Update!
Wow! After a full day of snow fallin' and colder weather, Cuchara has turned into a winter wonderland... And it seems that all of the events planned for the day and this evening are now on the back burner.
The Mexican Fiesta that was to be last night, then moved to tonight, has now been rescheduled for Thursday, February 16th.. Same time, Same place... We hope to see you there...
And the Folks at the Dog Bar & Grill have decided to keep the doors closed for tonight as well, with slick roads and snow covered highways up and down the mountain... Mostly, its just a great day to stay home, stay warm and stay safe...
Cuchara is burrowing in the weekend... And still waiting for you!
-------------------
7:25cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Cold. And Snow. And there you have the beginning of the day at the end of the week... another Friday and finally some excitement in the weather forecast... Unofficially, 6 inches of snow on the front porch and more coming down as we speak...
Currently 18 degrees with flakes falling fast... Forecasters are still calling for only a 90% chance of snow today... [Don't they ever look out the window?] with another 2 - 4 inches expected by nightfall...
By tomorrow... the snow should clear out by mid-day, expecting a high around 30, with sunshine back by Sunday and temperatures rising again...
Last night's Mexican Fiesta was a No Show for the moment, at least... Along about 4pm yesterday afternoon, the entire north side of Main Street went dark, along with all of the Panadero Loop neighborhood...
After much discussion and back and forth, the event has been rescheduled for tonight... Same location at the Brewed Awakening... Same time, 6pm... with the show to follow... Just like Groundhog Day, all over again...
Of course, the Dog Bar & Grill is open as usual tonight beginning at 4pm... Tomorrow and Sunday at Noon... And wouldn't the Dog Bar be a great place to take in the Super Bowl, don'tcha think?
Cuchara is waiting for you!

"Mexican Fiesta" Is The Theme For Tonight...
Thursday, February 02, 2012
7:28cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A bit of fog hanging over the upper end of the valley and the summit of the Spanish Peaks, with clearing skies to the north this morning... Ahead of a winter storm that will bring anywhere from 6 to 14 inches of snow our way before Saturday morning... Listening to the CoSprings Weather Pros, it would appear that the major thrust of this storm will be between Denver and Colorado Springs... with 1 to 2 feet of snow falling out on the eastern plains... If you'll be out and about, be careful with the driving and watch out for that other guy... That Other Guy who didn't read our warning this morning...
At the moment, 20 degrees, with a light wind, and a fast rising humidity level... Later today, a high in the mid 30's and a 4 in 5 chance, we'll see snow...
To celebrate the coming storm, the folks from the valley are once again coming together to eat, drink and enjoy good conversation. Our weekly potluck dinners are gathering friends and neighbors from all around and tonight will be no different. The theme tonight is "Mexican Fiesta"! With the show to follow in the Cuchara Community Room upstairs in the Cuchara Inn...
And planning is moving ahead for our big event coming up in June... Our first ever music festival will fill Main Street Cuchara with music fans for a day long event that is sure to make history... Planners will be meeting again tomorrow morning at the Dog Bar & Grill... 9:30 is the time... Anyone is welcome to join in...
And welcome to February already! We understand that the furry rodent in Pennsylvania saw his shadow this morning, which means 6 more weeks of winter... From our perspective, we'll still see snow on Mother's Day... So, what's a furry rodent know?
Cuchara is waiting for you!

The event will showcase a variety of local and regional artists with a wide selection of artwork... If last year's event was any indication, you'll find much to admire in this upcoming Winter Show 2012... Find out more at the SPACe Gallery website...

Catching Up On News Of The Weekend...
Monday, January 30, 2012
6:47cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Mild temperatures (for January...) no wind and crystal clear skies to begin the week... Not quite 32 degrees with 44 in sight for the high today... Mostly sunny skies should dominate until at least Wednesday night, when forecasters are calling for a 1 in 3 chance of snow through late in the day on Friday... All in all, a good weather week to look forward to...
Catching up on a few tidbits from over the weekend and into this week:
A belated "Happy Birthday" to our own Cal Sandbeck, who celebrated over the weekend with a multitude of friends gathered round the Dog Bar & Grill...
A huge Thank You to the folks who came together on Friday morning to join in the discussion with County Administrator John Galusha on ways for the County and the Cuchara Village to work together more effectively...
And, if you're anywhere close to the Valley, you'll want to make time for our weekly "Dinner and A Show" coming up this Thursday Night beginning around 6pm... This weeks theme for Potluck: "Mexican!"... It's all happening at the Winter Brewed Awakening on Main Street Cuchara...
Just a few short days until the Groundhog attempts an escape... And much to talk about over the next few weeks and months... Cuchara is waiting for you!"

Coloring Outside The Lines: Thanks For A Job Well Done!
Saturday, January 28, 2012
9:28cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and warming up on a Saturday morning in Southern, Colorado... Getting ready to crack the freezing mark in just a few minutes on our way up to a high of 36 degrees. With light winds and sunny skies forecast for most of the next week, we'll likely see highs stretch into the 40's for Sunday and Monday, then drop back into the 30's for the middle part of the week. With one more glance at the thermometer... 31.9 degrees at the moment...
So welcome to the Weekend Edition of the Cuchara Valley News... We want to extend a huge set of Kudos, and Thanks for a job well done to an enthusiastic group of volunteers who gave of their time and energy to slap a couple of coats of paint on the walls of the Community Room(s) in the Cuchara Inn on Friday...
All in all, almost two dozen hard working locals arrived in paint clothes and coveralls to brighten up the place. And, along the way, our theatre seating was freshened up as well, after spending a few years tuck away in storage... What began around 1pm with scruffy walls and dusty chairs, turned into bright colors and comfortable seating for any event by 4pm...
And thanks to Cal and Karen Sandbeck for the round of liquid refreshment after the painting party. Another great example of how OUR community will come together to create outstanding results.

Village Planners Invite You In For The Discussion...
Friday, January 27, 2012
7:48cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Mostly sunny skies this morning after a few snow flurries left about an inch on the deck earlier in the darker hours... 29 degrees and still a 1 in 3 chance of snow for later today and tonight... Tomorrow, sunshine for sure, highs only in the mid 30's and a bit warmer for Sunday and the beginning of the week...
So, back in stride after a day away... Took an extended field trip to Colorado Springs, leaving before the sunrise and arriving back in the valley after the sunset... One part family and and one part business trip...
And wait until you see what came about from the business trip side of things... Can not provide details at this point, but will let you know as soon as we do... suffice to say, we think it's something that you'll find rather exciting, just as we have...
And this note... Our Cuchara Village Community Planning group is meeting again this morning and you are invited to join in the discussion... On the agenda will be a roundtable talk with County Administrator John Galusha to make him aware of the robust activity that is happening higher up in the county and for the Cuchara Village in particular... We'll be sharing with our thought and ideas on ways to build community... And, boy have we got some ideas...
You are welcome to join us... 9:30 this morning, in the Community Room at The Cuchara Inn... Main Street entrance, then up the stairs and to the left... We hope to see you there!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Yoga, The Library And More...
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
7:30cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Crystal clear skies all around this morning, after a couple of inches of snow fell on the valley yesterday afternoon... Dense fog settled in for the evening hours, then washed away before the sunrise...
11 degrees on the thermometer, highs today and tomorrow ought to be in the low 40's with sunny skies and our next chance for snow is coming on Friday and Friday night... A 60% chance, they say, for another 1-2 inches to fall...
And for those keeping track of these things... We are way behind on our precipitation for the month and the year... Last year on this date, we had .4 of an inch of precip... This year, just .11 ...
Things are continuing to get active in the Cuchara Village over the last couple of weeks... Every Wednesday morning at 10am, A group of folks have gotten together to do Yoga in the Cuchara Room at The Cuchara Inn and this morning is no exception... You'll find the group by coming in the Main Street entrance of the Inn (Next to 'Pieces of My Heart'), then going up the stairs to the Conference Center...
And down La Veta way, our award winning La Veta Library is looking for volunteers to read for story hour... For kids from pre-school through 3rd grade, you can contact Ann at the Library... Call 742-3572 for more info...
And this note... Our strong winds from over the weekend brought down a few more trees in the neighborhood... Including one huge pine that fell across the parking area at Yellow Pine Ranch. Very tall and a thick trunk... A bit of work for the tree people to get out of there...
It's another spectacular day in the Cuchara Valley... Cuchara is waiting for you!

Soups and Chili On The Menu...
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
7:27cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Mostly sunny to north and partly cloudy to the south as we open the day with a pretty healthy chance of snow by the time sundown rolls around... 70% chance they say with only a 1 -2 inch accumulation... a few high wind gusts overnight have calmed down now and the air is mostly still... Current temp: 27 degrees and hoping to reach 33 later today...
Tomorrow, sunshine after the snow tapers off and climbing back into the 40's for the next couple of days...
So that rascally group responsible for our now weekly potluck get togethers have announced this weeks offering... Thursday night, bring your favorite soups or chili's or something to complement others... Or a favorite liquid beverage to go with all of it...
The Fun and Games begins around 6:00pm, Thursday night... with dinner to begin and games after... All being offered at the Winter Brewed in the Cuchara Village...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Dry As A Bone... But Winter Weather Is On The Way...
Monday, January 23, 2012
7:18cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A mild day already with temperatures just below the freezing mark to begin the week. Wild and windy weather over the weekend has moved east for the most part and things have calmed down a bit... Winds at the moment, 5-10 mph with an occasional gust here and there...
For today, we're looking for partly sunny skies, highs in the upper 30's and still a bit breezy... Tomorrow the story changes with snow showers likely... 60% likely they say... and up to 3 or so inches... Back to sunshine by Wednesday with temps back into the low 40's...
So the beginning of another week, already wrapping up January... Has it been that long since any measurable snow fell on the valley... Seems to us that the last time we saw anything of any consequence was right before Christmas weekend... Nearly a month ago... Our best snow months are ahead of us in February, March and April and in truth, things are right on schedule... High winds in January... Ought to bring piles of snow before we're all done with the season... Note to self... Get that snowthrower on the bench and get 'er fixed... It's going to be busy spring...

Requesting Letters of Support...
Sunday, January 22, 2012
8:27cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Reporting from the eye of the hurricane, it appears that winds have died down for the moment and things are relatively calm... Yesterdays Chinooks brought gusts as high as 55 mph through the valley as reported on the CSWD wind gauge Thoughout the night, things calmed a bit, although gusts around 25-30mph could still shake the house... The biggest casualty from our perspective? A cabin filled with smoke from the woodstove due to downdrafts coming down the chimney flue... Best NOT to try to light a fire when the wind is blowing at superhighway speeds...
For today, they say, expect more of the same as this weather system tries to work itself out on to the plains... We'll see a west wind of 25 with gusts up around 40... Next chance of snow: Monday Night and into Tuesday.
Here's something we rarely think about, until the time comes when we really need it... The work that is done by the unsung heros who work long hours to provide emergency medical care and fire protection, all on a volunteer basis... Now, the La Veta Fire Protection District has an opportunity to create a paid position for one EMT... To accomplish that, the District has applied to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment for funding to support this paid position. As the plan is laid out now, all EMT and volunteer fire department personnel are unpaid staff, who work hard to provide protection 24 hours a day thorughout the year. This EMT position would ensure that personnel would be in place on a consistent basis bolstered by the volunteer team that is already doing a great job.
To accomplish this goal, the LVPFD is asking for letters of support from local residents, summer residents and visitors. These letters will be submitted with the grant application when it goes up the line.
Address your letter to:
La Veta Fire Protection District
Attention: Malea Schmidt
P.O. Box 44
La Veta, CO 81055.
You only have about 10 days to get something written. All letters of support must be received by Jan. 31, 2012.
This is a great way to build our community and it only takes a few minutes to write a letter of support. Let's show the State of Colorado what we have to do this for the La Veta and the Cuchara Valley.

La Veta Library Earns National Recognition!
Friday, January 20, 2012
7:34cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Calm conditions and 38 degrees in the valley, after gusty winds last night and through the dark hours... Peak wind gusts reached upward to 40 mph, rattling the windows and just begging the snowshovels to go flying off the deck... Fortunately, the snowshovels are safe, the air is still and all is good... At least until the next round of winds kick up this afternoon. Forecasters are calling for highs into the mid 40's, but those chinook winds could gust again to 40mph... Tomorrow, a 50/50 chance of snow showers with less than an inch accumulation expected...
Another successful Cuchara Village event is history with quite a few folks attending last nights Ice Cream Social and movie... Even with the gusty winds and colder temps, locals were there to enjoy the Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and catch up on the latest news... Afterward, the theatre was packed and a great show was enjoyed by all...
And our congratulations go out this morning to Sandy Hackbarth and her team at the La Veta Library... Named this week as one of the top libraries in the nation, according to "Library Journal"... The La Veta Library was ranked at Number 20... Meaning out of 7,513 public libraries in the United States, La Veta is home to the 20th Best Library in the country... Quite an honor!
The community will be celebrating with an open house on Friday, January 27th, beginning at 5pm... The event will be held at the 1899 Inn next door to the Library... After all... We must remain Quiet inside the walls where the books are kept. Kudos to Sandy and her crew for a job well done!

Ice Cream, A Show and A Note Of Appreciation...
Thursday, January 19, 2012
7:39cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! An incredible morning shaping up with temperatures already nearing 40 degrees before the 8 oclock hour... Clear skies to the north, mostly cloudy to the south and we're just stuck in the middle with you... Look for highs today in the mid 40's today, tomorrow, slightly cooler and in the upper 30's for the Weekend... Chance of rain or snow, 20% for Saturday...
So, what's going on in the Valley? Tonight, another chance for the locals and visitors to get together, this time for an old fashioned Ice Cream Social... Tonight, around 6/6:30, join the gang at the Brewed Awakening for some delicious Blue Bell Ice Cream, fresh toppings and good conversation... Later, around 7, enjoy the show upstairs in the Inn...
And a note of appreciation to the special folks who put all this great events together... The same folks responsible for the Bear Fair, and the Cuchara Village Christmas are continuing to bring great things to the valley all though the winter season... We appreciate everything you do!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Inviting Those Fast Moving Drivers To Turn South...
Wednesday, January 18, 2012
7:56cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Wild and Windy this morning with gusts already topping out around 44mph... Sustained winds in the 15-20 category and mild temperatures... Already 27 degrees and looking for highs into the mid 30's...
Forecasters are calling for the winds to continue with gusts reaching upwards toward 70mph... This is not just a "Tie down the dogs" kind of day... It's time to tie down ALL of the livestock in the yard...
For the rest of the week and into the weekend... Forecasters are having a tug of war between "Breezy" and "Windy"... Not sure of the difference, but certain there is one to be found... Look for highs in the low to mid 40's over the next few days...
Did you know that we just happen to have not just one, but two billboards, at our disposal out there on Highway 160, close to the junction of 160 and Highway 12, north of La Veta? As you are driving west, you'll catch the first one just before making the turn south into the Valley... The other is for the benefit of eastbound drivers coming over La Veta Pass and sits just west of that same turn south...
The reason we're bringing these to the forefront? We are now in the middle of an opportunity to create a new Billboard campaign to entice those 160 drivers to get off the main highway and onto the back roads through La Veta and Cuchara... Designs are being considered and hopefully we'll have a decision very soon... Stay tuned for continuing developments and the final decision in the next few weeks...

School Of The Arts Announces 2012 Schedule....
Tuesday, January 17, 2012
7:26cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Mild and a bit breezy this morning with sustained winds in the 5-10 mph range... 22 degrees and a little hazy overhead, looking for temperatures to gain just a little bit during the day today... Highs ought be near 30... with wind gusts possibly reaching 35 mph? Batten down the hatches... Tie down the dogs! It's gonna be windy!
So with a couple days off and no wifi in sight, we spent the weekend out on the eastern plains of Colorado... Shirt sleeve weather for Sunday morning and warm temperatures... Arrived home last night to find another couple of inches of snow on the deck... Friends tell us the snow swirled and the winds blew... and ended just in time for us to arrive back home...
Another locals event is coming up this Thursday Night at the Brewed Awakening, this time, an Ice Cream Social featuring Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla... A Chance to catch up on the local gossip and enjoy the friendships of the Valley... and take in a movie afterward as well...
You know that Summer is just around the corner when the La Veta School of the Arts announces their schedule of Summer Workshops... With classes that cover all mediums including watercolor , sculpture, experimental drawing, working with copper, digital photography and more, you are sure to find something to peak your interest... Check it out at http://www.thelvsa.org/workshops.htm
With that, we're runnin'! It's a beautiful day in the Cuchara Valley! Cuchara is waiting for you!

Your 3-Day Weekend Planner...
Friday, January 13, 2012
7:41cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Blue skies and a single semi-sorta dark cloud hanging over West Spanish Peak to begin the day, with mostly sunshine expected and high temperatures reaching into the mid 30's... The warmup and the sunshine continues into the weekend, with temps around 40 for the most part. Overall, a great excuse to get out of the city and into the Cuchara Valley for the weekend.
And there are more than a few good reasons to be making the trip... Tomorrow, Lisa Dasenbrock and a few of her friends will hosting the "Christmas After Christmas" Garage Sale, in the Green Room at the Cuchara Inn. The event begins around 10am on Saturday, and goes on until mid afternoon. A great way to pick up some cool things in Cuchara before the Bronco game later in the day...
And speaking of "Later in the Day"... Later in the day, After the Bronco game, Sneakers will be back to entertain and get you up on the floor dancin' at the Dog Bar & Grill... They'll take the stage around 8:30 Saturday night...
Another jam packed Cuchara Valley Weekend, and a Three Day Weekend to boot... We hope to see you soon!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Community Spirit Shines Through...
Thursday, January 12, 2012
7:29cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A beautiful sunrise coming up over the Spanish Peaks this morning with a few high thin clouds to the south and other wise mostly clear skies... a frigid 14 degrees at the moment after a low of 2... Somehow, seems colder than that, but who's to say... It's just plain COLD...
As promised, only an inch or so of snow came out of yesterday's storm. More bark than bite this time around and roads were slick... Still, an easy broom sweep off the deck and steps...
Mostly sunshine for the balance of the day and only reaching a high of around 28 degrees. Warming up for the weekend with highs close to 40.... Chance of snow, 20% for the MLK holiday...
Last night proved once again how a community can come together to laugh and have a great time, in spite of the frozen temperatures outside... A potluck dinner, complete with the famous Littlefield Lasagna, along with crisp salads, delicious side dishes and scrumptious desserts... and enough wine to satisfy every palette. Follow it all up with a great movie and a chance to meet a few new neighbors and you have a special Wednesday night in the Village...
We've said it before and now again... Just a few years ago, the Village was a massive snow drift from New Years Day until May Day... Now, the lights are lit and folks are gathering around. A great time to be in the Cuchara Valley!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Dinner And A Show...
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
8:23cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Blue skies, high clouds, 21 degrees and the sun mostly present up above. With a pretty good chance that we'll see some snowfall later in the day... Better than half and half if you believe the experts. Not much accumulation to speak up, a couple of "less than 1/2 inches" perhaps...
Tomorrow, sunshine and highs into the upper 20's, warming up into the weekend with highs reaching 40 by Sunday...
So, tonight begins a new tradition when all the Valley locals gather for a delicious potluck dinner at the Brewed Awakening, followed by a movie in the Community Room at the Cuchara Inn... When normally, most Valley residents go into hiberation, this is a chance to get out and enjoy the company of our neighbors and feast on some fine foods... we understand we'll be tasting some rather famous concoctions... We're sure you'll be hearing the Oohs and the Aahhs, where ever you might be...
Potluck at 6, the show starts at 7...

Two Great Reasons To Come On Back To The Cuchara Valley This Weekend...
Tuesday, January 10, 2012
7:32cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and warm today... 50/50 chance for snow and cold tomorrow... Take advantage while you can with the weather in the valley this week... Looking for a high today around 45 degrees and dropping down to the freezing mark for Wednesday... Expect snow accumulation of around a inch... Double that and we'll see what comes... Right now 17 degrees, clear skies.
So, here are a couple of great reasons to be spending your three day weekend in the Cuchara Valley... First up, a few friends are getting together to host a "Christmas AFTER Christmas Sale" in the Green Room of the Cuchara Inn... RIght next door to "Pieces of My Heart" Gift Shop and just off the lobby of the Inn... This Saturday, beginning at 10am until about 3p... Items will include, what else, Christmas things here and there, and other stuff at great prices... All brought together by Lisa and Larry Dasenbrock of "Pieces of My Heart" and others in the Village...
And this, Sneakers returns to the Dog Bar and Grill this Saturday night... One of Cuchara's favorite bands is back with their incredible sound and music to dance the night away... Come in for an early dinner and stay until they turn the lights off... this weekend at the Dog Bar...
No snoozing allow in this place... Cuchara is waiting for you!

Cuchara Calendar Keeping Connections Close...
Monday, January 09, 2012
8:02cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Very high thin clouds and frigid temperatures to begin the day and the week... Not quite 11 degrees out there with frost in the air... We'll see sunshine throughout the day and into tomorrow, with a good chance for snow on Wednesday... 40% they say... Highs today near 40, tomorrow near 45... then mid 30's to round out the week...
So, with the new year, we thought we might do a little remodeling around the place... Take a glance just to the left of these words and you'll see that we've added a new Cuchara Valley Calendar to the mix to include all events going on in and around the Cuchara Valley... We'll focus on the Cuchara Village first and foremost and add in other stuff as it comes along...
You'll be able to check out the important details by clicking on the calendar dates... This will open up a larger view with the details of each event... Clicking the blue arrows will move you further into the year.
If you have something you would like posted on our calendar, please let us know... Not everything we're aware of is on there yet... so give us a couple of days to fill out the balance of our list...
And can you believe it? The summer season is just around the corner...

Proving Pareto's Principle: Emails Go AWOL
Sunday, January 08, 2012
8:28cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A brisk 17 degrees on the mountain this Sunday morning, as last nights snowstorm brought more Bark than Bite... We'll be generous and call it TWO inches on the deck, enough to require TWO swipes of the long handled broom to clear it off. Forecasters are optimistic that another ONE Inche(s) might fall before 11am... And a look out the window certainly proves them right for the moment. We'll see how that goes.
Later on, a high of 27 for the day, 34 for tomorrow and up to 41 for Tuesday... Sunshine for the next couple of days, than back to a 20-30% chance of snow later in the week...
We come to you this morning on bended knee, an exasperated look on our face and wondering who it was that said: Technology was going to save the world... Yesterday was one of those days, proving an amended version of Pareto's Principle... That some ideas simply rise to their level of incompetence.
Here is what happened. On October 17th, 2011, we chose to move our webpages to another server location and everything pretty much made the move intact... Our email server made the move too, but in the process, some of our mail was misguided and sent to a different planet... Yesterday, upon discovery of this event, 195 of your lost emails were recovered, forwarded and delivered...
If you were one of the few dozen folks who sent one of those 195 emails to editor@cucharavalley.org since October 17th, we owe you a sincere, heartfelt apology.
Some of you asked important questions... Some let us know about important events... Some sent us photos and other cool stuff... Some simply wanted us "Buy Today"... For whatever the reason (Except "BUY TODAY!) we are profoundly sorry for the mixup and for not responding to you in a timely manner. CucharaValley.org works best when everyone participates in the storytelling and obviously, if the message is not coming through, the story telling can not continue...
If you were one who asked an important question, we'll be in touch... If you let us know about an important event, while it may have passed, we appreciate your efforts... For those who sent photos and other cool stuff, we'll try and get them included as soon as we can... and this concession: If you would like us to BUY TODAY... We'll consider your offer... If only briefly.
We appreciate everyone of you who take time to check in with us on a daily basis. If you sent a note and did not hear back, please know that it's not our style to do that...
With all the switches now turned on... We will continue to provide the News Of The Cuchara Valley in the best possible way we can... and we thank you for your patience and support.
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Chamber Board Now Includes Cuchara Businesses...
Friday, January 06, 2012
7:22cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and crystal clear skies to begin the day on a Friday... Just a skitch under 25 degrees, hardly a wind to be felt and all in all, one gorgeous day in the valley. Yesterday afternoon saw a high temperature of nearly 57 degrees, high enough to cause one to break out the shorts and a t-shirt... Today, not quite the Summer like day from yesterday, with an expected high of only 41. Our next chance for snow comes Saturday night and Sunday with a 1 in 2 chance for Sunday snow... How much? Only an inch or two they say...
Our congratulations go out this morning to Don Ayres and Bob White, two Cuchara businessmen who have been elected to the Board of Directors for the La Veta / Cuchara Chamber of Commerce and began their two year terms effective last night...
In the past, participation from Cuchara businesses on the Chamber has not been as strong and this year, both communities felt it necessary to bring the entire valley into the fold.
A number of Cuchara residents were invited to run for the Board and our Thanks goes to Bob and Don for stepping up to represent the interests of the Cuchara Village and the businesses here...
And congratulations to Dave Rinehardt of the Signature Newspaper, elected President of the Chamber and all the rest who are giving of their time to build a better business community.
Great things are happening in the Cuchara Valley! Cuchara is waiting for you!

The Slumbering Giant...
Thursday, January 05, 2012
7:06cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A beautiful sunrise this morning with high thin clouds reflecting the suns rays... An even 20 degrees with a bit of a windchill dropping temps by 5 or 6... This afternoon will be the warmest day of the week with a high temperature stretching alllllmmmosssst into 50... We'll see if we can make that jump...
Another quiet day in the Village as Cuchara gets a bit of slumber after the "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration... A peek at the Dog Bar Webcam pretty much tells that story, and just know that it is a well deserved rest for a lot of folks. Tomorrow, we'll come together again to begin planning for some Spring time activities... A couple of Broomball pickup games, a new idea for "Winter Brewed" Awakening and recognizing the fact that we are just a few short months away from our biggest event to happen in the Village in maybe forever? Keep the weekend of June 15th and 16th circled on the calendar and plan to be here in the Valley... Gauranteed to be an amazing weekend to kick off an amazing summer!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Still Time To Give... To The Giving Tree...
Wednesday, January 04, 2012
7:26cvt -- Good morning, Cuchara Valley! Frosty cold this morning and sitting at our lows for the overnight, at 13 degrees with clear skies and sunshine for the day... Reaching for a high temp this afternoon of 45 and melting should continue, at least for a couple of more days... Look for highs tomorrow into the mid 50's, back into the 40's for Friday and dropping down closer to normal for the weekend, only into the 30's on Saturday and Sunday...
Wrapping up our Cuchara Village Christmas would not be complete without a nod to our Giving Tree and the folks who gave so freely to help those who need it most in our area... The Giving Tree stood proudly in the lobby of the Timbers over the holiday and had many great gifts both on and under the tree... and to give you an idea of the kind of work we are supporting, please take a moment to read a letter from the Resource Center:
We're THRILLED that the merchants of Cuchara have chosen to partner with Open Arms Pregnancy Resource Center to interrupt the cycle of poverty and teen pregnancy. Growing healthy families is a win-win for all citizens. Just to encourage you (and anyone else with whom you might share this), I'll relate the saga of one client dear to my heart. This mom, in her late 20s and expecting her 2nd child, moved to Huerfano County about 2 years ago. We've greatly enjoyed working with her since she has such a passion to learn and to be the best mom possible.
This young woman, abandoned by the baby's dad, has a heart of gold and has volunteered her own time and effort to assist with some of Open Arms' endeavors. She's been suffering with chronic kidney disease for the past several months and has been unable to work fulltime since August, so at our recent Baby Shower For Jesus--having no money to spare--she made a set of coupons, to bless other moms with meals she has prepared! She has also organized the Christmas Gift Workshop that our clients will participate in next week, helping them to get creative about giving homemade gifts, unique and affordable. (When one has no funds for anything but rent and groceries, that's a HUGE bonus.)
By God's grace, her second kidney-related surgical procedure (today) seems to have been successful and her physical suffering should be greatly diminished. Through it all, she's cheerful, and has been more concerned for her children's welfare than her own--the kind of individual this world could stand to have more of!
We do see clients that make us shake our heads and wonder what future there is for them outside of supernatural intervention, but the clients that stick with us and devote some effort to the Earn While You learn curriculum do seem to mature and progress toward a healthier life for them and their little ones. The ones who can't seem to keep their appointments still get love and prayer from the Open Arms team, but their reluctance to invest in their future dims the appeal for them. (They're always welcome to come and earn Baby Bucks, but we don't do handouts.)
I do hope I get to meet you at some point; meanwhile, all of us here appreciate the encouragement and whatever tangible support comes from the Cuchara merchants. We do wish each of you a merry and prosperous Christmas!
You can still send a tax deductible gift to the Open Arms Pregnancy Resource Center. Mail your contribution to: Open Arms Pregnancy Resource Center, 116 E. 6th / P.O. Box 536, Walsenburg, CO 81089 or click through http://openarmsprc.org/... When you do, please mention The Cuchara Village Merchants in your note...

Quiet In The Village, For Now...
Monday, January 02, 2012
9:07cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and temperatures warming up nearly 10 degrees in the last half hour... Now 24, winds are light and the barometer is rising... All making way for a fantastic day in the Cuchara Valley... Later on and through the week, expect mud season to return with highs into the mid 40's today, and nearly, maybe 50 for tomorrow and into Thursday... Cooling down for the weekend with highs only in the 30's...
Wow! Already January 2nd and we're blazing through the New Year! The Party is over for the moment and the Village is once again getting back to sleep... A well deserved slumber, no doubt... Normally, this might be the long winters nap that the Cuchara Valley is used to, but not this year... The Dog Bar & Grill will be staying open weekends through the winter season and into spring as they have done the past couple of years... While The Timbers and The Cuchara Inn are closed for the season, both And let's not forget our friends and steadfast sentinals on the corner... Bob White, Dyna Lou and Dakota Dukes...
New this year, we're working on plans to have The Brewed Awakening open for 3 days a week offering hot drinks, coffee and cocoa, homemade breakfast items, cookies and other simple treats... The idea came from our Cuchara Village Planning Committee, looking for ways bring our winter residents together more often... and to give people a place to gather for card games, discussion groups or just to sit and banter... All of the folks behind the counter would be volunteer, all in an effort to keep the village from snoozin' too long in the mornings... We would love to hear your ideas! Send us a note at editor@cucharavalley.org and let us know your thoughts...

The Pinecone Drop: A Fitting Exclamation Point On A "Cuchara Village Christmas"...
Sunday, January 01, 2012
8:21cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! And a Happy New Year to you, as well, as we welcome 2012 with gusto and send 2011 packing out the door...
A great start to the new year, as a few high thin clouds will give way to sunshine and temperatures in the mid 40's later on this afternoon... Look for light winds through the day and a repeat of the same over the next several days... By Thursday, highs are expected to be above 50...
New Years Eve in the Cuchara Village was over the top as New Years Revelers gathered under the Giant Pinecone to ring in 2012. The Giant Pinecone? We suspect you had to see it to truly believe it, but nearly 200 were out on the street to count down the seconds and at precisely 10cvt, the Pinecone lit up in brilliant color and traveled down the cable to the Oohhhs and Awes and Auld Lang Synes of all who came to watch...
The Drop of the Giant Pinecone was a fitting exclamation point on the "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration over the last two weeks... Two weeks filled with the sounds of kids laughter, shouts of Bingo, informative presentations from Cuchara's past, a murder mystery crime to be solved, not one but two great NYE Dinner Celebrations at the Dog Bar and The Timbers and an incredible Opening Ceremony that brought Bagpipes and a Christmas Tree to the Village for the first time in... ever? We met new found friends who heard the news and came up to spend a few days or so... and enjoyed the company of our summer neighbors who opened their cabins for the first time in winter... You think we might want to do this again next year? Just you wait and see...
Our hope for you is that 2012 brings you much love and laughter, good friends and family, and an opportunity to be a part of this wonderful place we call home... The Cuchara Valley of Southern Colorado.
Cuchara is waiting for you!

New Years Eve... Cuchara Valley Style!
Saturday, December 31, 2011
8:42cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley... Well, it's almost here, the New Year... and we're going out like a Lion for 2011... Windy conditions this morning, hopefully tapering off by afternoon with highs expected into the low 40's again for today. Outside, right now, 37 degrees, a bit of a breeze and sunshine... For tomorrow, sunshine again, with highs back into the mid 40's...
So... It turns out the Laurel Reath was our perpetrator... Murdering Mr Yule Tide, CEO of the Sugar Plum Fruitcake Factory, by stabbing him with an icicle... during the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre at the Timbers Restaurant. over the last two nights... Over 160 guests were witnesses to the event over the last two nights, and were pressed into service to solve the crime... With good observation skills and paying attention to the clues, several would be detectives were able to crack the case and were rewarded for their efforts.... All in all, a great time for everyone, a delicious dinner served up by the Timbers kitchen and a marvelous performance by the Spanish Peaks Players...
And this... The event was so successful that the Players say they'll be back at the Timbers with even more fun and frivolity in the coming year...
Onward, as we march toward midnight and the New Year's Eve festivities planned for tonight... The Timbers and the The Dog Bar will both be hosting Dinner and a Party beginning around 7pm... The Dog Bar is SOLD out for dinner, but anyone is invited to come in around 9 or so to enjoy the Big Cat Band until well into the midnight hour... The Timbers is offering a five course dinner with "The Two Of Us" performing on stage throughout the evening... Call 742-3838 for reservations there.
And in the middle of all of that, Main Street Cuchara will be place for the family fun beginning around 9pm or so... Brewed Awakening will be open for snacks and hot drinks, and we'll drop the Giant Pinecone precisely (or not) at 10cvt... Great family fun for the little ones in your clan... and mom and dad, too.
Tomorrow, time to recuperate! Come on into the Village and enjoy black eye peas and chicken fried steak all day long at the Dog Bar...
Wrapping up an incredible two week "Cuchara Village Christmas"... Come on back to see us!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

The Ice Is Not So Nice! One Call Saves The Day...
Friday, December 30, 2011
8:05cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine, warmer temps and a nice day setting up for Southern Colorado... Already 37 degrees and we'll stretch to high of 45 before the day is over... Maybe a bit of wind will blow through to spice things, all in all a great start to the weekend.
New Years Eve looks great too, with a high temp tomorrow of around 40... a bit breezy and clear... Cooling down for the party with a low overnight of 15...
Huge Kudos go out this morning to Jim Van Lue, who singlehandedly solved the problem of the glare ice that covered virutally all of Main Street in the Village.. The ice was so bad that walking across from your car to the Dog Bar was life threatening, and cars were spinning their wheels and getting stuck trying to get up the hill... Jim made a call to the Colorado Department of Roads and got 3 tons of sand/salt donated to the cause. The first two pickup loads arrived yesterday and together with Cal Sandbeck, Larry Dasenbrock, Austin Van Lue, Don Ayres and a host of others... the mixture was spread across the entire Village... Problem solved and just in time...
So checking out the schedule... Later today, Broomball Part Two takes place at the ski area parking on Panadero... Tonight, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Murder", the Encore Edition at the Timbers... Tomorrow, New Years Eve in the Village, with Special Parties at the Timbers and The Dog Bar... and an Especially Special Party in the Street... You'll want to be here for the first ever... Dropping of the Giant Pinecone... at 10cvt / Midnight nyt...
And you still have a chance to pick up your Commemorative Special Edition "Cuchara Village Christmas" Tree Ornament... Only a few left at the Cuchara Country Store. And all the proceeds from the sale of these beautiful ornaments will go to the Cuchara Village Planning Fund for events in 2012... You can also call the Country Store at 719-742-3450 to place an order...
Wrapping up 2011 in Grand Style... Who would've thought just a few years ago, that the Cuchara Village would be so full of life in the Winter...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Wrapping Up A Cuchara Village Christmas...
Thursday, December 29, 2011
7:52cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A beautiful day in Southern Colorado, already 38 degrees and sunshine to the north, and high clouds over the peaks... The weekend is setting up nicely too, with highs into the mid 40's, sunshine and maybe a bit breezy... All in all, a great weekend for a party!
And what a great time we had last night, as Cuchara's Mountain Man, Will Prator, brought his collection of animal pelts, and his stories of trapping and trading in Southern Colorado to the Community Room in the Cuchara Inn. For a time, Will earn his living off trapping, with skills handed down from his grandfather to his father and from his father to him... Along the way, Will shared his secrets and his tools of the trade, including several large traps and the stories behind each one... Interesting and informative... We'll try and find ways to let Will tell his story more often...
Tonight and tomorrow, It's Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre at The Timbers Restaurant... We understand both shows are nearly sold out, so you'll have a little competition as you play detective throughout the evening... "Have Yourself A Merry Little Murder" will be interactive and will allow you to ask the tough questions and solve the crime... Think about the boardgame "Clue" with fine dining included... It's tonight and tomorrow at the Timbers!
Also on tap for this afternoon, a great time for kids with Storytime and Crafts in the Green Room of the Cuchara Inn... Begins at 2pm. Tomorrow, Round Two of BroomBall at the parking area on Panadero Loop across from Cuchara Mountain Resort...
Finally, Saturday Night, we will ring in the New Year with a Festive Party, Cuchara Style... at the Dog Bar, At the Timbers... and on Main Street... Don't be late to the show!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Winter Bingo Brings Out the Crowds...
Wednesday, December 28, 2011
8:00cvt -- Good morning, Cuchara Valley! Mostly sunny, and a few high clouds in the southern sky... 21 degrees on the thermometer and looking for highs only in the mid 30's for the next couple of days. Over the weekend, forecasters say we'll get into the 40's with sunshine continuing... Next chance of snow? Not even on the radar...
Halfway through the week, with the New Year coming on fast, our Cuchara Village Christmas has brought many good friends and family to the valley... Our Winter Bingo last night drew so many folks, we were scrambling for enough tables and chairs to give every body a good seat with a view... Nearly had to raid the Dog Bar for a place to sit.
All in all, 52 folks came to play Bingo and contributed nearly $300 toward future events in the Village... By far, the most favored event of the Christmas Celebration. Most importantly, it was a great opportunity for friends to get come and spend time together...
Tonight, Will Prater presents "Cuchara's Mountain Man" with demonstrations of wildlife pelts and stories of the past... Over the next couple of days, we'll have another Storytime for the kids, Broomball on Friday, and of course, the one and only Cuchara New Years Eve Celebration... We hope to see you here, as we wrap up 2011 and ring in 2012...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Three Great Kid Friendly Events...
Tuesday, December 27, 2011
7:25cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Above freezing and on the way to a warmer day, although, you could not tell by just looking at the forecast... For whatever reason, NOAA is saying that our high today will only reach 31... Hmmm. Already 35, and judging by yesterday's standard, we ought to be in the mid 40's by late morning. Perhaps it's just a misprint or the Cuchara Valley has again performed its magic on the weather... However the case may be... It's a beautiful day with sunshine from now until sometime next year...
Three great events are on tap for the next couple of days, as we wrap up the calendar for the Cuchara Village Christmas Celebration for 2011. Tonight, Bruce Johnson will once again be calling Bingo in the Community Room of the Cuchara Inn. Great prizes are in store for the winners and great fun will be had by all... Begins at 7pm.
Tomorrow night, Cuchara's own Will Prather will lead a "Mountain Man" demonstration and show off his collection of wildlife pelts and other items... Participants will be able to touch and feel everything as Will describes them... Snacks and drinks will be available after the presentation. It all happens in the Cuchara Inn Community Room at 7pm
And don't forget, for the younger set, Storytime and Crafts this afternoon at 2pm in the Green Room of the Cuchara Inn. A great way for the kids to create something special for Mom and Dad...
And this note: Our very beautiful "Cuchara Village Christmas" Ornaments are now available, but going fast! Visit the Cuchara Country Store to get yours before they are gone. All proceeds from the sale of the ornaments, funds future events in the village.
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Movie Night, Story Time, and Bingo! The Celebration Continues...
Monday, December 26, 2011
8:05cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Light winds, cold conditions to begin a Monday, with this, the final week of 2011. 16 degrees, mostly clear skies, only a few high clouds above... and reaching for a high today in the upper 30's. Later on this week, look for high temps to stretch even further, into the mid 40's with sunshine everyday into the weekend...
It is the day after Christmas and we hope that you have had a most wonderful holiday with friends and family... And that all the gifts under tree from Santa were exactly what you wanted. Here in the Cuchara Valley, we're excited to see old friends roll in town over the weekend as we begin week two of "A Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration!
Tonight, and tomorrow, we're presenting a couple great events for the small folks (and the big folks, too) in your clan... At 7pm, tonight, a Muppett Christmas Carol will debut at Movie Night in the Community Room of the Cuchara Inn... Snacks and drinks will be available courtesy of the Inn. Tomorrow, at 2pm, Ginny Carlson will be back, along with Lisa Dasenbrock of the "Pieces of My Heart" gift shop, with Story Time and Crafts for the younger set. That event will be held in the Green Room of the Cuchara Inn, next door to "Pieces of My Heart".
And tomorrow night, Bruce Johnson returns with his special brand of Bingo... Once again, in the Community Room of the Cuchara Inn....
The Celebration continues! Cuchara is waiting for you!

Planning and Plotting A Broomball Strategy...
Saturday, December 24, 2011
8:24cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Another frigid beginning for the day with temperatures in the single digits once again. While we stayed above Zero for the overnight, we have yet to break above 5 for the day... Blue skies and sunshine above make up for it all as we can expect to climb up to the mid 20's before the afternoon is out. For Christmas Day, tomorrow, we'll be above freezing once again with highs expected in the upper 30's for the next few days...
Our "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration continues with our Village Shops open last night until 7pm, then our Inaugural session of Winter Bingo... About 20 folks, young and old, came out to enjoy the evening with Bruce Johnson calling the numbers... A Special Thanks to all of our Merchants who provided Bingo Prizes: The Timbers Restaurant, Dakota Dukes, The Dog Bar and Grill, Beary Best Dips and The Gastineau Family... A good time was certainly had by all...
Across the street, Cal and Karen were hosting a "new to the Valley" country band, Dry Cimarron, out of Raton, New Mexico... Cal, of course, was plotting and planning his strategies for Broomball later this morning... Karen was trying to recall where the medical supplies were kept...
Seriously now... Last year's Broomball games brought over 90 people out to play and we're looking for you to join in the fun... You'll find the games at the Parking Area 4 inside the Panadero Loop, directly across from Cuchara Mountain Resort... Stories and Lies to be retold time and again at the Dog Bar following the event...
And tonight, Christmas Eve Services at the Cuchara Chapel...Always, a special time.
Cuchara is waiting for you...

Village Shops Open Til 7pm, Bingo On For Tonight!
Friday, December 23, 2011
8:11cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! A beautiful day on tap with the sun already high in the sky and the temperature just a tad below zero... Ice crystals hang on the trees, blue skies shine above and it's going to be a wonderful day... After a low of 7 below, we're looking for high temperatures in the mid 20's this afternoon, not so cold tonight and into the mid 30's for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day... The best news? Sunshine expected for the entire week into New Years Eve...
With another unofficial 14 inches of snow recorded on the front porch, our total so far for the season has stretched all the way to 114 inches... Yesterday's storm brought some of the driest and lightest snow we've ever seen... Easy to broom off the driveway and clear things quickly. Still easy to slip and slide as we did on Main Street, Cuchara yesterday. Thanks to our good friend, Wayne Ware for the strap and tug out of that snowdrift...
With the storm, Cuchara business owners chose to remain closed yesterday, with slick highways and the desire to keep employees safe in the storm. With clear roads, the Dog Bar and Grill will be opening at Noon today and tomorrow for guests coming into town... Tonight, the Dog Bar welcomes another new band to the stage, Dry Cimarron, bringing a special brand of Texas country music to the Cuchara Valley... The music begins around 8:30 or so.
The Timbers is open tonight as well, with a delicious winter menu in place... Doors open at 5pm.
And The Cuchara Inn is open this weekend and all through next week. Special discounted room rates are available with a two night stay. Check out the "Cuchara Village Christmas" event schedule and come stay a few days with us...
And our planned Winter Bingo event that was scheduled for last night, is now set for tonight, in the Community Room of the Cuchara Inn. Join Bruce Johnson and the usual suspects for all the fun, after taking some time to shop our Cuchara Village Shops for last minute Cuchara Christmas gifts. Shops will be open until 7pm. Tomorrow, brings Broomball back to the Valley... 11am at the Ski Area parking on Panadero Loop...
As always, Cuchara is waiting for you!

Our "Cuchara Village Christmas" Ornaments Have Arrived In Town...
Thursday, December 22, 2011
8:16cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Another blustery winter day in the valley, temperatures hovering in the low teens and the snow continues to fall... Somewhere in the neighborhood of six inches or so at 6am and more since then. Those who have made the drive down Walsen way, are telling us that the winds are blowing and snow is drifting... Highways are icy and conditions are treacherous... Best to stay inside, stay warm and stay safe til this blows over...
Through the day, we can expect another 3 - 7 inches before we're done... Overnight, windchills will drop below zero and then...
The sun will come out tomorrow... For Friday and into the first of next week, sunshine and highs back into the upper 30's... Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are looking great for traveling or finally getting family into the valley for the holiday.
We have some especially great news to share with you this morning... After a bit of a delay, our "Cuchara Village Christmas" Ornaments have finally arrived in town! These Commemorative Limited Edition ornaments are available in several beautiful colors, perfect for your Cuchara Christmas Tree and the best part is... All of the proceeds will go to the Village Merchants Fund to promote future Cuchara Village events.
You can pick one up at the Cuchara Country Store in Cuchara or if you are outside the area and wish to purchase an ornament, you may do so, by calling the Cuchara Country Store at 719-742-3450...
Last night, while overcast and snowy, proved to be a star gazing night anyway, as Bruce Johnson led an informative talk on the Winter Solstice and introduced a few of the winter constellations to a rather large audience... With just the right mix of science and story telling, Bruce's presentation was certainly a star-studded event in the Village.
Tonight, get ready for Bingo, in the Community Room at the Cuchara Inn. Once again, Bruce Johnson will be on hand to roll the Bingo cage and call your winning numbers...
The "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration continues... Cuchara is waiting for you!

Christmas Cookies For The Kids... Stargazing Tonight...
Wednesday, December 21, 2011
7:54cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Bright blue skies, temperatures still in the basement, to begin the day... Not quite 6 degrees on the thermometer and reaching for a high of 35 this afternoon... All of this before another storm marches through and leaves another 8-12 inches behind in it's wake...
The snow will linger through Friday, they say, then sunshine and highs into the mid 30's for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day... Looks like some great weather ahead for Broomball!!
A "Cuchara Village Christmas" continues to roll along with our youngsters enjoying a special day yesterday... Ginny Carlson and Dona Reece created an extraordinary event with Sugar Cookies, Frosting & Sprinkles and Storytime all wrapped into one great afternoon. About half a dozen kids were on hand to decorate cookies to their hearts content and made a great mess while at it.. A good time was had by all!
Tonight, Bruce Johnson will take you on a tour of the heavens, when he leads a Solstice Stargazing Party beginning at 7pm... Interested folks will meet at the Brewed Awakening and depending on the cloud cover will lift their eyes skyward or head up to the community room... All in All, Bruce promises an informative event...
And one last thing... Kudos and much applause to our County Plow driver, Jerry, for digging not one of us, but two of us out of the deep snow yesterday... When one gets stuck, trying to get the other out... It's always good to have the county at your back... Thanks again!
Christmas is just around the corner! Be safe while traveling! Cuchara is waiting for you!

A "Cuchara Village Christmas" Continues: Story Time and Cookies!
Tuesday, December 20, 2011
8:14cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and 4 degrees to begin the day, a far cry from the 50 plus degree temperatures we enjoyed over the weekend... Unofficially, on the deck, 17 inches of snow since yesterday morning, with most of that coming during the daylight hours yesterday...
And one more twist in the mix, windy conditions throughout the day yesterday, created substantial snow drifts... some waist high on a short guy like me... Add it all up and you've got one stuck 4 wheel drive Jeep on the road in front of the cabin...
The good news, the Jeep is now off the road and sorta into the driveway... The bad news... There is still 3 feet of snow drift between it and the keys to get it out of there...
Today and tomorrow are looking good with sunshine and highs right around the freezing mark... Another good chance for snow coming Thursday with 3 - 5 inches to add on to our totals this morning... It is not yet the New Year, and already over the 100 inch mark for the season...
In spite of the near blizzard conditions, both of our Monday night "Cuchara Village Christmas" events went very smoothly last night. Several friends and family enjoyed "A Christmas Story" in the Community Room of the Cuchara Inn, and next door at the Timbers, the "Wines For The Holiday Table" was described as 'Spectacular', by one of the attendees... Made all the more special by the fact that the snow was swirling outside the window...
When you get out and about, the "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration continues this afternoon with a special Story Time and Cookie Decorating for the youngsters... Ginny Carlson will be leading the StoryTime from her Rocking Chair in the Brewed Awakening... and Dona Reece is busy baking the cookies and preparing the frosting, sprinkles and candies for the kids to toss around...
It all happens at 2pm... At the Brewed Awakening in the Cuchara Village!
Tomorrow night, Bruce Johnson will lead a Solstice Stargazing session... providing an astronomical look at the heavens, from a Cuchara point of view... The event begins at 7pm... At the Brewed Awakening on Main Street.
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Opening Festivities Proclaimed A Success!
Monday, December 19, 2011
7:19cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! With Forecasters flip-floppin on the fundamentals, it is hard to tell... Will we see the 5 - 9 or the 8 - 12, since a few days ago, it was 9 -15... All of which is rather unimpressive since the eastern Colorado plains and all points South and east, are on target to get upwards of 20 inches and BLIZZARD like conditions over the next 24 hours or so. 20 inches in the Cuchara Valley is a little different than 20 inches out on the high plains... you can bet that folks will be at the ready out there as the storm rolls through...
Here in the valley, 23 degrees at the moment, with fog settling in and the snow about to begin... Time again to check the gas in the snowthrower and have the shovel at the ready. By this time tomorrow, snow may be lingering and by Wednesday, sunshine returns, only to have another storm system roll through for Thursday... Look for high through the week in the low to mid 30's, overnight lows in the teens...
So the "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration is officially underway, after our Opening Festivities last night in the Village. About 80 folks braved the chilly weather to listen for the bagpipes to begin and slowly grow louder as the piper made his way down Main Street. After a short reading of scripture, the Tree was officially lit, Christmas Carols were sung and Santa arrived in grand style, taking time to visit with the children and hand out a few gifts along the way...
A fitting beginning for our first ever "Cuchara Village Christmas"... Tonight, tickets are still available for our "Wines for the Holiday Table" event at the Timbers Restaurant... Doors open at 6:30pm, while down the street, kids of all ages can enjoy "A Christmas Story"...
And we hope to see you there! Cuchara is waiting for you!

Cuchara Village Planning Committee Has Done Well...
Sunday, December 18, 2011
8:29cvt -- Good morning, Cuchara Valley! Sunshine and warmer temperatures to begin our day, as lows overnight barely dipped below freezing... 30 degrees just before 7am has now rebounded to nearly 38 and looking for highs into the early 40's for the afternoon...
Things are a changing for tonight, tomorrow and into Tuesday with the forecast changing every few hours as well... Yesterday, they said we might get 9-15 inches of snow out of this storm, today, they have backed down to 5-9... In any event, it's a 90% chance that it will snow between now and Tuesday morning...
It would appear that we will not be getting the brunt of this storm... The weather guys in Colorado Springs are using the word "Blizzard" to describe what will be happening out on the eastern plains of Colorado and into Oklahoma and Texas, where they could see as much 18 inches of snow in the panhandles of both of those states...
So, today is the day when everything comes together for the very first of what we hope to be many, "Cuchara Village Christmas's". The Village looks incredible with all of the festive lighting, The Village Christmas Tree is in place and adorned with lights and ornaments. Inside the Timbers, the Giving Tree is waiting for your generous donations to help the Open Arms Resource Center of Huerfano County... And, as time passes over the next two weeks, the Village will play host to more great events for the entire family, than we've seen all year...
So, who's responsible for wrapping these two weeks into a great gift for the Valley? Since mid September, the Cuchara Village Planning Committee, along with The Cuchara Village Merchants, have been meeting on a weekly basis to bring this event together. The success of the Cuchara Village Fall Bear Fair, paved the way for all of these great ideas to pour forth. This week, you'll be seeing the fruits of these labors... And, of course, you know that we're not nearly done... Be watching for details of what's to come next. You will not believe what we have planned to open the Summer Season in the Cuchara Valley...
If you happen to run across any one of our Cuchara Village Planning Committee members (You'll know who they are), take a moment to simply say Thanks. It is the hard work and dedication of these fine folks that will shine through over the next couple of weeks.
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Saturday, December 17, 2011
8:27cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Temperatures are rising after an overnight of 11, we're just above 16 degrees with sunshine, clear blue skies and not a breeze in the air... Look for highs today into the lower 40's, mid 40's for tomorrow and then...
Change is a-comin for Monday and into Tuesday... Forecasters are looking for a 70% chance of snow through the day on Monday, with 6 - 10 inches of snow possible... Overnight, another 3-5 inches are on tap to fall... By sunrise, Tuesday, sunshine will be back with 9 - 15 inches on the ground...

Cuchara is waiting for you!

Village Merchants "Giving Tree" To Help Local Charity...
Friday, December 16, 2011
7:46cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! The good news this morning? We stayed above ZERO for the overnight lows... The not so good news? It is downright FRIGID as the sun comes up and lights up the skies over Southern Colorado... 4 degrees, after a low of 3... makes a chilly walk down to the edge of the driveway to put the trash out for collection...
Forecasters say that today will be much like yesterday... Highs into the mid 30's, little to no wind and sunshine all around... Up into the 40's for the weekend, then a chance for snow Sunday night into Monday... as high as 50% for Monday. No word on how much just yet...
The weekend is upon us, "A Cuchara Village Christmas" begins on Sunday and everything is coming together in a remarkable fashion... Yesterday saw the village abuzz with activity as the Village Christmas Tree was raised up, lights were strung and ornaments hung with care... As one of the Village Merchants said, "Lit up more beautifully than I have ever seen it..." and they are right. It is a wonderful sight...
One of the most important elements of our "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration has just come together in the last few days... Inside the Timbers Restaurant, there is a Christmas Tree, designated especially to be our "Giving Tree"... The Merchants are partnering with the Open Arms Pregnancy Resource Center of Walsenburg to provide gifts of clothing, infant items and cash to enable Open Arms to provide for the people they help.
In the next couple of days, we'll be publishing a list of the most necessary items that the Open Arms Resource Center can use... and we will have envelops available at the Giving Tree to leave cash or a check, as well... If you're not able to be with us in the next couple of weeks, we'll have an address for you to send something in...
This is a great cause for the Village and for all of us who make our home, year round or vacation get away, here in the valley... Let us show all of the people of Southern Colorado the caring spirit that is Cuchara...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

New Country Duo To Debut At The Dog Bar & Grill...
Thursday, December 15, 2011
8:00cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Blue skies and frigid temps in the valley this morning, 8 degrees and frost on the trees... Searching for highs today right around 32. The rest of the week, highs are expected in the mid 30's, with lows dipping into the single digits... Time to wrap up those pipes and find an extra blanket in the cedar chest...
First chance of snow, by the way? Sunday night, 30%...
Just ahead of the weekend, the final weekend before Christmas and the first weekend of "A Cuchara Village Christmas"...
Open Festivities begin at 5pm on Sunday, with the Tree Lighting, Caroling, the arrival of the Big Guy in Red... Our hope is that the tree will be upright when we see it on Sunday... Yesterday saw a little interuption in plans when the John Deere failed to start. Hopefully, that situation is resolved this morning... It would be difficult to decorate a horizontal tree, afterall.
And, Cal and Karen are bringing in a new Country Duo for this weekend at the Dog Bar & Grill... "Cruz and Cornay" will get things jumpin' on Friday and Saturday nights at around 8:30... It is great to see (and hear!) the music on a December weekend in the valley... And we'd like to see you come on up and enjoy the weekend with us!
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Wrapping Our Arms Around One Of Our Own...
Tuesday, December 06, 2011
7:28cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley... Frosty and cold this morning with icy roads and sunshine to begin the day... nearly 6 degrees BELOW zero as the sun comes up and looking for a high today only in the high teens... Maybe 20 if we're lucky. Tonight, we stay above Zero, if you believe the forecasters, and get above freezing for tomorrow and all the way into the weekend... The good news... sunshine should prevail for the rest of the week and into the next...
It is time again to wrap your arms around one of our own as someone here in the valley is facing a tough time... If you spent any time at the Dog Bar & Grill over the last several months, you have most likely met Shane Rankin, the guy behind the bar serving up jokes and stories along with a good beer...
Yesterday, we learned that Shane lost his daughter in car accident over the weekend in Arizona. It is the toughest thing that any parent has to go through and for Shane, it means traveling down to Arizona for services and to take care of other details, all while dealing with pain of losing a child.
We ask you to keep Shane and his family in your thoughts and prayers over the next few days and weeks... And if you would like to help him cover his traveling expenses or simply wish to send along a card or note, you may do so by sending it to: Dog Bar & Grill, PO box 129, La Veta, Colorado 81055.
The Cuchara Community is a Caring Community... Something we've known for a long time...
Cuchara is waiting for you...

BroomBall Is Back!
Monday, December 05, 2011
7:37cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! We think it's a safe bet to suggest that last night was definitely the coldest night of the season so far... Sitting at our lowest of the lows at MINUS 1 Point 2 degrees and not improving too much over the next few hours or so... Outside, gray skies, a bit of fog over the valley and ice hanging on the trees...
That snowfall that was supposed to dump another 16 inches on the valley has so far produced about 5 of those inches... Forecasters have backed off a bit from their original predictions and now say 1 - 3 additional for today, and a tad more for tonight... which would give us maybe 8 out of this most recent go round... and 28 inches since Thursday morning. And to LoProg... Me thinks the storm has run out of steam. He was suggesting another 18" Plus!
And maybe he will be right...
So, less than two weeks away from our "Cuchara Village Christmas" Inaugral event... The festivities get started on December 18 with Santa's arrival along with the Tree lighting in the Cuchara Village... Over the next two weeks, we have tons of activities including the first (and second) of several BroomBall Tournaments this season... Last year's Christmas Eve BroomBall pickup game brought ninety folks out to play and this year we ought to have significant snowpack to make it all better than ever... Broomball will be at 11am on Christmas Eve (Saturday, Dec 24th) and again at 11am on Friday, December 30th... Location to be determined... And, of course, we'll let you know.
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Gloat, LoProg, Gloat...
Sunday, December 04, 2011
7:41cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Cold and more cold on the way, is the rule of the day for Sunday morning, currently sitting at 15 degrees... And very close to our overnight lows. Later on today, temperatures will rise, although not by much... Expect a high today only in the mid 20's, overnight lows dipping down to zero and a high tomorrow of only 9... Yikes! The Arctic Winter has settled in...
So it seems LoProg was right... Not that we like to give him too much credit as it tends to cause his head to swell. After only 9 inches on Thursday, Friday was relatively calm... Another 10 or so inches yesterday brought our three day total to near 20... and what did Loprog say? 18-24? And possibly 6" more?
The guys who get paid to tell us what's what are now suggesting another round of storms will sweep in tonight with snow depths of 10-16 inches more by Midnight Tuesday... Add it all up and we'll be measuring by the furlong rather than the yardstick fairly soon...
So Gloat, LoProg, Gloat... and don't be surprised by that phone call you get to come clean my driveway...
Cuchara is waiting for you!

Good Food, Good Drink... Perhaps An Overnight Stay At The Inn?
Friday, December 02, 2011
7:11cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Not so cold and a clearing sky to start the morning, although the winds have kicked up in the last half hour or so... Overnight low dropped down to 4 degrees shortly after midnight and since then, rebounded to our current temp of 29 degrees... Only 9 inches or so fell in the Village with most of that coming well before sundown last night... Found another inch or two on the deck railing this morning.
Forecasters are giving us a slight reprieve for the day, calling for mostly sunny skies for the afternoon, and high temps into the mid 30's. Tonight, the snow machine gears up again with 1-3 expected by tomorrow morning, another 2-4 during the day... Snow chances continue through Monday, up to 40% on Sunday night...
Its a stretch, but LoProg has a long way to go to reach his predictions of 18-24 inches... In this case, it's a good thing...
A quick correction for yesterday's report... told you about the three different Story Time, Crafts [or Cookie Decorating] sessions that will be happening during the "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration...
The Storytime and Cookie Decorating will take place at Brewed Awakening on Tuesday, December 20th, rather than Tuesday, December 19th... Having TWO TUESdays in a row is confusing enough... Seriously... it's Tuesday, December 20th, folks! At 2pm...
Otherwise, another weekend is upon us and that means, good food, good drink in the Village tonight and through the weekend... Dog Bar opens at 4pm tonight, Noon on Saturday and Sunday... Timbers will be open beginning at 5pm tonight and tomorrow and of course for Sunday Brunch...
And the Cuchara Inn is open for Check-in tonight and Saturday for you to stay as long as you wish... A great deal if you drive up for dinner and drinks and decide not to risk the icey roads going home...
The Valley is beautiful after the storm... Come on up and see us soon! Cuchara is waiting for you!

A Great Time For The Kids: Storytime, Crafts and Cookie Decorating..."
Thursday, December 01, 2011
8:30cvt -- Good Morning, Cuchara Valley! Big, frosty flakes are comin' down, it's 20 degrees and already an inch or two has fallen on the ground... The snow that we talked about yesterday is here today and won't let up until at least tomorrow morning... Forecasters have pulled back on their prediction just a bit, now calling for a max of 15 inches by the time we are done on Saturday night...
LoProg has chimed in, calling for 18 - 24 inches on the ground by tomorrow morning... OR 18 - 24 with an additional 6 by Saturday morning... All I'm hoping for is that LoProg will come and clear my driveway... We shall see...
Plans are set and people are calling to make reservations for our "Cuchara Village Christmas" Celebration...
If you have small ones in the house, you'll want to make sure they can be here for our Storytime, Crafts [or Cookies!] on three different dates over the Holiday Season... Our own StoryTime Reader, Ginny Carlson will read to children (up to 3rd grade) in the Brewed Awakening on Tuesday, December 19th at 2pm, and again in the Green Room at The Cuchara Inn on Tuesday, December 27th and and Thursday, December 29th.
At the Brewed Awakening on the 19th, the kids will have some time to decorate Christmas cookies and take a few home for their families... on the 27th and 29th, the kids will get to be creative with crafts and other fun stuff...
Make plans to be here! Our first Annual "Cuchara Village Christmas" is an event you will not want to miss!
Cuchara is waiting for you!
